In 1989, during blasting work on the site to which this quarry belongs, a huge cavity was accidentally discovered.

It was the largest basalt cave in Central Europe.

In this cave there was a large lake and a 10m long lava tunnel. This kind of thing was previously only known from caves in Hawaii.

This find "was" a unique natural phenomenon in that Hawaii is much younger than the Vogelsberg.

Unfortunately this cave no longer exists. It was "accidentally" blown up and made into road gravel by a mercenary of money-hungry individuals while they were still waiting for a report on the preservation of this cave.
