The Rennsteig cycle route follows the Rennsteig courier and trade route, which has existed since the Middle Ages, for 195 km. The long-distance cycle path is mostly carefully graveled, sometimes also on quiet sections of country road. On the ridge of the Thuringian low mountain range, the cycle path is largely identical to the hiking path of the same name, but differs here and there from the historic Rennsteig so that steep climbs were avoided.
