The gray tower is 38 m high, the highest surviving defense tower in Germany. It is recommended from the gray tower a tour along the city wall in an easterly direction, past the Edermühlengraben, then continue to the cathedral square, market square and back to the starting point.

The tower was built by the Kurmainz city lords after Fritzlar's destruction by Hessian troops and was first mentioned in 1274 as "turris magna" (large tower)
