Millions of years ago, the area around Oberlech lay beneath a shallow sea. Over time, thick layers of anhydrite settled there, which later transformed into gypsum. Today, when rain penetrates small cracks, the gypsum begins to swell and slowly dissolves. Cavities form underground until the overlying earth gives way and collapses. This is how the characteristic hollows of the Lower Gypsum Holes, which have been protected since 1988, were formed.
