The Pestenkreuze, which are located at all four outlets (Engen, Hattingen, Tuttlingen and Liptingen), are a very popular photo opportunity. They recall the times of the great plague in the 17th century during the Thirty Years' War, when in more than a few years more than half of the population was destroyed. With the inscription "Wanderer flee! Here the plague lives" they should frighten the stranger, but at the same time ask for salvation from the plague. Today, the plague crosses are signs of dire need and God's help.
