The Baarbach is an interesting river in North Rhine-Westphalia that is about 17.6 kilometers long. It rises as Lägerbach in the heights of the Iserlohn city forest south of the city center of Iserlohn and flows into the Ruhr east of Schwerte. Due to the geographical conditions, almost all of Iserlohn's wastewater is channeled and transported in the Baarbachtal before it enters the Ruhr after being treated. The Baarbach has a height difference of 316 meters between source and mouth and a bottom gradient of around 18‰. It runs underground through the old town of Iserlohn and reappears on the surface north of the city center in the area of the Nußberg and Iserlohnerheide districts.Over the years, the Baarbach in Iserlohn was partially piped. There was a feasibility study on the disclosure and ecological improvement of the Baarbach for parts of downtown Iserlohn, which was carried out in 2010. This study aimed to reopen and ecologically upgrade the Baarbach in certain areas of the city.
