The 18 meter Urk lighthouse was built on the westernmost point of the island in 1844. A coal fire had burned on Urk since 1617, which was intended to show the way for ships from Urk and ships from Amsterdam heading towards the North Sea. This allowed skippers to reach safe harbors. With the closure of the Zuiderzee and the creation of the IJsselmeer, the lighthouse lost its importance. Nowadays, its top offers an incredible view of the Urk skyline. For an entrance fee, you can climb the lighthouse in the summer months, and in other seasons by arrangement.
