The castle was first mentioned in a document in 1263 as "Elenhouch" and was then usually referred to as "Elnhoch". The name "Mellnau" only came up for the castle around 1500. The Archbishop of Mainz, Siegfried III, came as the builder. von Eppstein, who had the castle built as a replacement for the destroyed Hollende Castle around 1248 to protect the Wetter monastery. The 19 meter high keep was built between 1329–1331.
