The very first chapel on this site dates back to the 11th century. After the Reformation, when the formerly Catholic church in Bieber had become the Protestant Lutheran Church, the Catholic citizens fought to at least be allowed to use the castle hill chapel for church services. However, this right was not granted to them until 1660. For almost two hundred years, the miners working in the area, most of whom were migrant workers from the Catholic Kahlgrund, received pastoral care in the Burgberg chapel, which is dedicated to Saint Mauritius - the patron saint of miners.
