In 1874, Prussian hydraulic engineers tapped fifteen springs in the districts of Kassel and Bieber and connected them to each other via a tunnel-like, accessible pipe system. The route along all source tunnels is 15 km long. 330,000 Frankfurt citizens are supplied with the annual water volume from this system.
A water treatment plant is located opposite the tunnel, where all the water from the system is analyzed and cleaned.
