Castle Knowledge was mentioned for the first time in a document dated January 28, 1372, because in that year Count Adolf von Kleve issued a letter of protection for the parish of Weeze, but at the same time the house of the official of Goch, Heinrich von der Straeten, (heren Henrix hues end Guede van der Straten) excluded. The von der Straeten family from Flanders received knowledge as a fief of the Xantener Viktorstift and chose it as their headquarters. In the same year the count also took the House of Knowledge under his protection.

The first secure date of the knowledge castle goes back to the year 1370. Already at that time there was a bailey and a main castle; from this we conclude that the original plant is probably older. The Gothic north and west facades of the outer bailey and the base of the "Thick Tower" can be seen as witnesses to this era.

In 1401 the altar was consecrated in a small castle chapel, which indicates the importance of both the complex and the owners at the time. The property belonged to the van der Straeten family. The castle chapel in its current form and decoration was built about 100 years ago as an important work of the Nazarene school (architect Vinzenz Statz, painting work under the direction of Eduard Steinle).

In 1461 the property passed to the von Loe family, who still own it today. Although by then almost the entire area of today's castle complex had been built on, it is only since then that we have more detailed knowledge of the further history of the building.
