The Hessigheim barrage is a river causeway and consists of a double lock on the right bank, a three-field weir and a power plant on the left bank. The 50 and 60 year old floodgates have reached their useful life in a few years. In the event of a damage, a gate of the left-hand chamber was irreparably damaged in 2010, so that since then the left-hand chamber has been out of operation and a lock has been made only via the right-hand chamber.

Pedestrians and vehicles can cross the Neckar at the Hessigheim barrage. If there is ship traffic in the lock, the locking process can be observed from the bridge.
Due to the cavities found on the land side, the right chamber was taken out of service at the end of 2016. As of today (autumn 2020), only the left lock is used.
