It is not for nothing that Putbus is called the Rose City or “the white city”: all the houses on the Circus, on the market square and on Alleestraße are white and have rose bushes in front of the houses.

Some houses are very nice, others are completely run down and the windows are boarded up with brown OSB boards. So you experience the circus with mixed feelings.

The Circus Putbus is considered to be the last uniformly designed roundabout in Germany. The magnificent square was created in 1828 on the orders of Prince Wilhelm Malte I of Putbus and was rebuilt with classicist buildings in 1845. The largest building on the circus is the former Pedagogical Institute of Putbus, which was built in 1833-1836 according to plans by Johann Gottfried Steinmeyer.
Over the decades, the Circus Putbus developed from a walking path into a built-up square with eight star-shaped paths and eight lawns. The circus in Putbus is a highlight for every architecture lover.
