In the forest a safe route across a boggy valley (called a "bottom") is known as a "passage": Murray’s Passage leads from Fox Hill and Stonard Wood across the Long Brook in Withybed Bottom to the pond at Andrew’s Mare on the hill beyond. The passage is named after an Admiral Murray who, in 1901, was killed whilst out hunting. The construction of the passage was paid for by monies donated to his memory.
