The reservoir serves as the lower reservoir for the Waldeck pumped-storage power plants, as a flood retention and equalization reservoir for the Eder, Edersee, Fulda, Weser and Mittelland Canal, and as a storage reservoir for the "Affoldern" run-of-river power plant. The body of water is designated as a bird sanctuary and serves as a fishing area.
