The one-storey half-timbered building was the first school building in Telgte. It was built in 1820 and could accommodate 180 students. After it was 57 years of boys' school and 33 years of girls' school, the house came to the Knickenberg'sche Institut in 1911, a higher boys' school with boarding school, which was founded in 1859 and existed until 1936. When the building, which housed a physics and drawing room, was no longer needed from 1933 due to falling student numbers, the Reich Labor Service used it as a canteen. Finally, it served as a public library (1939 - 1945) as well as a youth home and DRK home. Since 1975 the "Knickenberghaus" has been a meeting point for the senior citizens' association and various associations.
For the 750th city anniversary in 1988, the first "meeting in Telgte" with Günter Grass and other well-known writers took place here.
