"Helgafell" means "Holy Mountain" and refers to the location of a Viking shrine. Guðrún Ósvífursdóttir, the main character of the Icelandic Laxdæla Saga, lived here in a church until her death as a recluse. It is buried near the present church.
According to the saying, one has three wishes, while one climbs the Helgafell for the first time. You have to go up the hill fromGuðrún's grave and not turn around, do not talk and do not talk about the wishes.

The legendary basalt hill is only 74 meters high, but offers a beautiful view of Helgafellsvatn, the mountains of Snæfellsnes and the archipelago of Breiðafjörður. At the foot of the mountain is the picturesque Helgafellskirkja with the grave of Guðrún Ósvifursdóttir. There is also a path that goes around the hill.
