The Fliegerhorst Pferdsfeld was an air base of the German Air Force. The air base was in the Soonwald part of the Hunsrück near Bad Sobernheim in Rhineland-Palatinate. The nearest air base is Büchel in the Cochem-Zell district, about 50 km away. Pferdsfeld last served as a base for Jagdgeschwader 73. Wikipedia

The history of the "Fliegerhorst Pferdsfeld" began, like the history of many air bases, in the mid-1930s, when the Reich Aviation Ministry ordered the reconnaissance of operational airports, probably in preparation for the planned war. As part of this exploration, an area used for agriculture was identified on the southern edge of the Soonwald, in the district of the small village of Pferdsfeld, and in the summer of 1938, appropriate construction work was carried out to make it suitable for aircraft.
In August 1939 the construction of barracks and fuel storage began and on September 1st, 1939 a group of close reconnaissance aircraft HS-126 was transferred to the field airfield for reconnaissance flights to the French border. However, in October 1939 they were relocated to a site to the south, closer to the border. From November 1939 to June 22, 1940, the end of the French campaign, the airfield was occupied by long-distance reconnaissance aircraft DO-17. After the departure of this association, the Pferdsfeld air base was no longer used for military purposes until the end of the World War.
