"The church town of Gammelstad was declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO on December 7, 1996. It is a well-preserved example of traditional northern Scandinavian church towns. There were once 71 of these. Gammelstad's church town, with 408 houses, is the largest of Sweden's 16 church towns still in existence .The region was an important hub for trade and markets as early as the 14th century. The Nederluleå Church was the center for a parish that stretched from the coast to Norway.Gammelstad is the "old Luleå". As the country rose more and more from the sea, a new port closer to the water had to be founded. This is where today's Luleå came from.Today Gammelstads-Kyrkstad is no longer just a church town where people live on the holidays. There are also permanent residents. The town is also a popular visitor region. Many old buildings have been preserved. "
