The Renaissance castle Adelsheim was built in 1614 by Dean Degenhart Neuchinger. For centuries it served as a noble residence for chancellors, high officials and later wood goods publishers. Adelsheim Palace was acquired by the district in 1963 and inaugurated as a museum in 1968.

Today one of the most important folklore museums in Bavaria is housed here. The visitor gains a comprehensive picture of the life of the people in the country between Watzmann and Untersberg in 13 rooms.

The focus of the museum's collection is on the “Berchtesgadener War”: artistically painted chip boxes, colorful wooden toys, rough carvings, flutes, figures of saints and cribs and filigree leg carvings.
