On the southwestern tip of the island of Fehmarn, there used to be a group of trees called "Flügger Holz", which helped navigators navigate the seafarers. When this was received, the Prussian Ministry of Commerce and Transport approved the construction of the first Flügger lighthouse, which was put into operation in 1872. It was an octagonal, 15.5 m high, yellow brick tower with a red lantern. Its fire burned at a height of 18 m above sea level and shone 13 nm far.
Only 44 years later he was replaced by a new tower. Also he octagonal, made of yellow bricks, with a red lantern, but with 37.5 m more than twice as high. After its commissioning in 1916, the old tower was demolished to its foundations. In 1975, the tower was clad with red and white fiber cement panels due to damage to the outer walls.
In the years 2009 to 2011, a complete renovation was carried out, in which u.a. these panels were removed so that he regained his original appearance. Because of its special significance in terms of the history of technology and cultural landscape, it was listed as a historical monument in 2003.
