The Pfinz relief canal branches off from the Pfinz at the Hühnerloch weir in Grötzingen. At Hagsfeld the Pfinz and a little later the Alte Bach cross it in two culverts. The Hirschkanal, which runs north, branches off in the Hardtwald. In Eggenstein-Leopoldshafen the water falls into the lowlands and flows between flood dams to the Rhine.

A nature guide published by the environmental office of the city of Karlsruhe calls the Pfinz relief canal “a particularly extreme form of an unnatural flowing water” that is characterized by a straight course, a consistently regular cross-section, paved banks and a lack of bankside trees.
