After construction from 1822 to 1829, the penal institution began operations at the end of October 1829. Surrounded by a square "castle wall", there are seven star-shaped, two-storey cell blocks inside.

During its 141-year history as a prison, one of its most prominent guests has been Al Capone, whose cell has been faithfully reconstructed and is open to the public.

Immediately in front of the main entrance on Fairmont Ave there is a "kiosk" where tickets can be purchased. Upon entering through the main entrance, one can take advantage of an included multilingual audio tour. I found them very impressive.

A large part of the prison is unfortunately in a state of disrepair.
