The museum is located on Theresienhöhe in three historic halls of the Old Munich Trade Fair. The Old Trade Fair Halls were designed in 1906 by Wilhelm Bertsch, built from 1907 onwards and opened on May 16, 1908. The buildings are made of reinforced concrete. After the trade fair moved to Riem, the German Museum - Transport Centre moved into the listed halls. In 2003, Hall III opened on the topic of technology and mobility. In October 2006, Hall I opened on urban transport and Hall II opened on the culture of travel. In 2011, the newly built entrance hall with offices, a lecture hall, visitor foyer, cash desk area and museum shop was added. A special feature in Hall III is the Benz Patent Motor Car Number 1, a milestone in technology. It is the first automobile in the world with a combustion engine and dates back to 1886.
