The castle was built in the 10th century strategically on a rock overlooking Lake Maggiore and the area to Varese. For a long time, the two noble families, Torriani and Visconti, fought over the fortress, which was rebuilt by the victorious Visconti and enlarged by the famous courtroom. Since the 15th century it belongs to the Borromeo family. Today, the castle houses an interesting doll and toy museum.

The Rocca d'Angera, also known as "La Rocco Borromeo" or "La Rocca di Angera", is truly unique on Lake Maggiore. The remarkable thing about this castle is its condition. To this day, the building from the Middle Ages enthroned completely and intact on a limestone cliff overlooking the lake.

The history of Rocca d'Angera dates back to the Roman and Lombard era. During this period, the fortress structure of the Rocca d'Angera was created. The walls of the oldest part of the castle exist since the 12th and 13th centuries. The year 1277 was the time from which the sex of the Visconti first claimed against the Torriani. Especially for the Visconti family this year presented a decisive experience, because Otto Visconte claimed as archbishop of Milan as the winner of the battle of Desio.
