During the First World War, more than a million Belgians fled across the border to the neutral Netherlands. More than 5,300 of these were received in Ede. The camp, consisting of barracks, was an entire village complete with a school, hospital, shop, workshops and a church. There was also its own power station for lighting and powering machines in the workshops. The camp was largely self-sufficient. There was even its own law enforcement service. Ede refuge consisted of four quarters. The facilities were located in fifteen minutes, the other three quarters were residential locations with the names Leyedorp, Maasdorp and Scheldedorp. The quarters were separated by two main streets.
