Because of its location between the old town of Grevenbroich and the old castle, the Kamper mill is also called the "castle mill". Its origins go back to the time when the city was founded. The mill is an undershot mill, i.e. the waterwheels dip into the water with their lower part and are driven by the movement of the river.
In the past, the grain mill was also connected to an oil mill, of which the Ölgasse in Grevenbroich is still reminiscent today. When petroleum displaced oil before the turn of the century, however, the oil mills on the Erft lost their importance.
