A geological peculiarity on this stage is the Sandberg near Steinheid. Before the Thuringian Slate Mountains developed into their current form, it was covered with deposits of Zechstein and Buntsandstein. The Sandberg still bears witness to this today.

About 200m before the summit there is a memorial stone with the inscription »The Kammweg is free / 9. Nov. 1989 «, which is intended to remind of the continuous Rennsteig hikes that are possible again.
The sand mountain is a residual clod resting on the older slate, which consists of sandstone rich in kaolin (up to 35% kaolin). It was a supplier of raw materials for the porcelain manufacture and the glass industry.

Kieferle
To the west-southwest, the valley of the Grümpen, whose eastern source is on the western slope, clearly separates it from the almost equally high dry spruce, on whose northern and eastern slopes there are further sources. To the east it is bounded by the Göritz. The Schwarza also rises north of the mountain. In the south is the 837 m high Rittersberg, whose eastern neighbor is the Breitenberg.
Since the first-mentioned rivers flow into the Main and thus ultimately into the Rhine, but the Schwarza into the Saale and thus into the Elbe, the mountain lies on the Rhine-Elbe watershed. Located to the south of the Rennsteig, which runs over the neighboring Sandberg, the Kieferle roofs south and is part of the Southern High Slate Mountains.
