Information as of March 21, 2020:

Parts of the castle complex are being renovated. Access and parking are not possible by car. The castle tavern is closed. The museums and the bastion garden are open during regular hours.

The castle complex was built in 1355 by Bishop Berthold Burggraf von Zollern and served as a bishop's seat until 1725. Over the next few centuries, Willibaldsburg Castle was expanded by various bishops. In the 17th century, the castle was converted into a prestigious residence. In 1633, the castle was conquered by the Swedes but recaptured the same year. Of the 420-meter-long castle complex, the walls and bastions, the armory, the 63-meter-long gatehouse, and the "Gemmingenbau" (Gemmingen Building) with its two towers have been preserved. The north wing of the Gemmingen Building houses the Jura Museum, featuring the famous fossils of the Solnhofen limestone, while the south wing houses the Museum of Prehistory and Early History. In 1998, the so-called Bastion Garden, featuring plants from the Hortus Eystettensis, was established on the Blacksmith's Bastion.
