The name of the Dreisam is derived from the Celtic: *tragisamā, "the very fast".
The Dreisam begins in the basin-shaped Dreisamtal in the southern Black Forest in Baden. The confluence of the somewhat longer Rotbach from Höllental and the Wagensteigbach, which is a little richer in water, is near the bridge on Landesstraße 127 from Kirchzarten to Stegen.
