    The Capitol of Havana was originally planned as a seat of government in 1912. In the reign of the Fifth President of the Republic of Cuba and dictator Gerardo Machado, the construction was inaugurated on May 20, 1929, but only two years later by Parliament.
    The land on which the Capitol is located, was originally a wetland and was used in the Spanish colonial era first for the accommodation of slaves, later as a botanical garden. Architects were the Cubans Raúl Otero and Eugenio Rayneri Piedra, under whose direction the building was built between 1926 and 1929.
