Short Neuchâtel jungleSouthern Friesland is hiking countryWinding paths run through the Neuchâtel primeval forest, the heart of the Frisian Wehde. Thanks to the well-signposted "node system", visitors to the forest can find their way anywhere in the woods at any time - without any maps or navigation devices. In the event of an emergency/accident, simply tell the emergency call center the nearest hub.
Rescue center and fire brigade then know where you are.

StoryThe Neuenburger Jungle within the Neuenburger Holz is the remainder of an old Hudewald. Information on the use and condition of the forest has only been available since the late Middle Ages. The forest used to belong to the so-called commons and was jointly owned by the village community and was subject to wood use, land use (such as leaf raking or sod extraction for bedding for the cattle sheds) and forest pasture.
In 1462, Count Gerd the Brave of Oldenburg laid claim to the Frisian Wehde, which had previously belonged to the county of East Friesland, and expanded his dominion by building Neuenburg Castle. Since then, the forest area belonged to the dominion of the Oldenburgs.
