  • Görlitz circular railway cycle path (11 km total length)

We only drove a bit because the connection is really not that great.
Here is some information from: bahntrassenradwege.de
Small but beautiful bike path on a disused railway line from the quarries of the Königshain mountains to Görlitz. So far, only the first section of this railway line has been expanded as a cycle path.
There are no large engineering structures such as tunnels or viaducts on this cycle path. The strengths of the route lie in the calmness away from the big routes and a great natural landscape.
There is criticism of the connection of the circular railway cycle path to the city center of Görlitz (station) and at the abrupt end of the route in Königshain-Hochstein.

The former railway line, which went into operation in sections between 1905 and 1913, ran from Görlitz via Königshain-Hochstein and further via Hilbersdorf and Buchholz to Weißenberg. The western section was closed in 1972. Passenger traffic on the eastern section of Königshain-Hochstein - Görlitz was maintained until 1993, until 1994 there was still freight traffic on the route. The official decommissioning took place in December 1997. On April 30, 2009 the bike path on the route was opened.

One of the reasons for the construction of the railway line was the need to remove the stones from the quarries of the Königshain mountains. Even today, just a few hundred meters from the Königshain-Hochstein train station, you can admire the remains of the granite rock towers and the quarry lakes.

  • Who would like to stay away from the busy routes, has the circular track a great alternative 11 km along the old railway embankment. At the end arrived in Königshain there is only a few meters further on a small bakery which offers hearty offers. Or you drive up to the Hochstein and enjoy the view in good weather right into the Giant Mountains. The bike path is asphalted from Görlitz to Königshain and there are hardly any gradients. On the way back to Görlitz you can let it roll comfortably.
