A mill jam in the Fürstenwalder Spree was first mentioned in 1298. In 1588, the first lock was built on the orders of Elector Johann Georg. In 1738 and 1833, new locks were built between today's weir and the north lock. In 1891 the current north lock was put into operation. In 1914 the south lock followed.
