Hiking

It's best to drive only to Schierke and walk the remaining kilometers (if you want anyway). Then it is not so expensive. Very nice is the drive from Wernigerode to Schierke.

Compared to the trip to the summit or a return ticket on the Brocken, partial routes only cost a small amount and still offer the full steam train experience.
I recommend rail&walk as a Harz adventure tour.
