The pilgrimage church Maria Elend (also pilgrimage church Maria im Elend) is a small baroque style church near Dietramszell in Upper Bavaria. Together with isolated buildings, it lies about one kilometer south and above the town on the flank of the Zell forest at 712 m above sea level in the Maria-Elend district of the same name.
The church was built from 1687 to 1690 on the edge of a court mark of the Augustinian canons, whose monastery had been in Dietramszell since 1098. It was consecrated by Auxiliary Bishop Simon Judas Thaddeus Schmid on July 15, 1690, although it received its current name at a later date. In front of it was a chapel, which was to be enlarged due to a growing number of visitors and which could be seen in the pictures of the suffering Christ and the painful Our Lady. Pilgrimages to this place are said to have existed as early as 1600. [1]
A local legend wants to know that the origin of the church goes back to a rescue from need in the Thirty Years' War. A man persecuted by an armed bunch called the Mother of God and saved himself in an unexpectedly found hole in the earth.
