      In Espeln, a district of Hövelhof, the Rodehuts chapel served as a room for the celebration of Holy Mass until 1899. But in the long run it wasn't really suitable for it. Therefore the Epelner made the decision to build a new church in the village. The then teacher Hoischen from Espeln played a major role in this decision.

      The first cornerstone was laid on June 5, 1899, and after around 8 months of construction, the new church was inaugurated on January 25, 1900 as the Sacred Heart Church. The property on which the new church was built is a foundation of the Kolon Höddinghaus and Meermeier.
