In the heart of the Eider-Treene-Sorge region, near the beautiful towns of Friedrichstadt, Husum, Heide, Schleswig, and Rendsburg, you will find the Bargen Ferry on the Eider at river kilometer 50/51. At approximately 180 km, the Eider is the longest river in Schleswig-Holstein. Since 1554, the ferry connection across the 108 m wide Eider between Erfde-Bargen and Delve-Schwienhusen has been of both economic and cultural importance. In 1961, this connection was abolished by the construction of a road bridge near Pahlen. On May 26, 2001, the new "Bargen Ferry" was christened and put into operation during an inauguration ceremony. Following the motto "Ferry connects people and regions," the old connection between Dithmarschen and Stapelholm was restored. This year, the association and ferry are now in existence for 20 years: The ferry association has continuously expanded its services, the technical equipment of the ferry and the infrastructure at both ferry docks and is now an important tourism player in the Eider-Treene-Sorge river landscape with an average of 5,000 guests per season.
