Visible from afar on the edge of the Thuringian Basin, the parish church of Sankt Martin in Witterda rises as the highest building in the village. The defiant church tower was built between 1550 and 1553; the church was consecrated in its current form in 1710. For 300 years now, the parish church has not only been a place of prayer and the center of community life, but also a symbol of the place.
