Saint Catherine of Siena is the saint who inspired this monastery, where silence found its voice in the bright colors of its walls and in the cobbled corridors that converge on the beautiful main square.
Santa Catalina is more than a monastery, a melting pot of secrets that the visitor can barely guess through its enclosures, but whose truth will remain forever within its walls.

A guided tour of this beautiful monastery is highly recommended, with its intensely colored walls and the interesting history hidden behind these walls. Founded at the end of the 16th century, this complex developed as a city within the city, where the nuns lived their lives isolated from the outside world.

Santa Catalina is one of the most fascinating religious buildings in Peru. Nor is it just a religious building – the 20,000-sq-meter complex is almost a citadel within the city. It was founded in 1580 by a rich widow, doña María de Guzmán. Enter from the southeast corner.

The best way to visit Santa Catalina is to hire one of the informative guides, available for S20 from inside the entrance. Guides speak Spanish, English, French, German, Italian, Portuguese or Japanese. The tours last about an hour, after which you’re welcome to keep exploring by yourself, until the gates close. The monastery is also open two evenings a week so that visitors can traipse through the shadowy grounds by candlelight as nuns would have done centuries ago.

The Monastery of Saint Catherine of the Sisters of the Order of Saint Catherine. Catalina de Siena is located in the center of the Peruvian city of Arequipa in the Andes, more than 2300 meters above sea level. The monastery and church are dedicated to St. Dedicated to Catherine of Siena. The twenty nuns who currently live in the monastery live in a side wing that is part of the cloister. You can visit most of the monastery building.

A beautiful monastery. Still run by Dominican women. The houses, some of which are still inhabited, shine in red and blue. The gardens are well laid out. Guided tours are offered. You walk through the complex and learn a lot about monastery life and see how the nuns lived back then. The houses are so well preserved and prepared as if a nun had just moved out yesterday. A view from a house is priceless. A wonderful view over the city.
