Tips

  • Fort Point is a signature landmark beneath the Golden Gate Bridge, built at the height of California’s Gold Rush in 1853. Later, the Army Corps of Engineers utilized the site in the Civil War and the Army in World War II for detention barracks before it became a National Park Site in 1970. It remains a popular tourist destination thanks to its unique history, architectural style, and world-class scenic views, so stunning that it made a memorable cameo in Hitchcock’s 1958 masterpiece, Vertigo. You may see “soldiers” taking part in a Civil War reenactment or catch a glimpse of a romantic proposal, which is all part of the magic when visiting this historic site.

  • Fort Point is a fortification period near San Francisco. The Spanish flag was raised here for the first time in 1776. At the end of the 19th century the fort's time was over and it has seen the most diverse flags during this time. Today you can visit the fort and you have a great view of the Golden Gate Bridge.

  • Fort Point is a masonry seacoast fortification located at the southern side of the Golden Gate at the entrance to San Francisco Bay. This fort was completed in the 1860s just before the American Civil War by the United States Army, to defend San Francisco Bay against hostile warships. The fort is now protected as Fort Point National Historic Site, a United States National Historic Site administered by the National Park Service as a unit of the Golden Gate National Recreation Area.
In 1769 Spain occupied the San Francisco area and by 1776 had established the area's first European settlement, with a mission and a presidio. To protect against encroachment by the British and Russians, Spain fortified the high white cliff at the narrowest part of the bay's entrance, where Fort Point now stands. The Castillo de San Joaquin, built in 1794, was an adobe structure housing nine to thirteen cannons.
