Best Mountain Biking Routes to Cairnmount Hill Standing Stones

Tips

  • The standing stones just north of Cairnmount Road in Irvine and not far from Sourlie Wood Nature Reserve run by the Scottish Wildlife Trust.

It's not an ancient site but is in fact a modern construction in about 1987 of stones found in a nearby open-cast coal mine.

These stones effectively mark the closing of the last coal-mine in the land attached to Eglinton Castle after a period of at least 400 years of continuous production.

  • The reasonably steep but short incline to the stones at the top of Cairnmount Hill

  • have to detour route if after 16.30 as visitor centre closed ..very muddy at places
