As part of the Battle of Nations near Leipzig (October 16-19, 1813), parts of the French army were entrenched in the Petersberg Citadel.
Allied troops from Prussia, Austria and Russia began a strong bombardment from the Swedish ski jump. The citadel was not destroyed or captured,
but the shelling hit and destroyed around 120 houses on the current cathedral square, which was half the size at the time, so that it could no longer be built.
