Invites you to linger. Wooden tables and benches are shaded under the trees

The Smugglers' Sea is also a good place to take a break to watch waterfowl.

very nice idyllic corner. There are almost always a few anglers here.

Nice rest area and swimming seems to be allowed.

Just a tad off the beaten track. It's lovely and quiet here.

The approximately 32-hectare "Smugglers' Sea" lies in the Eggenstein-Leopoldshafen district. The lake's name, reminiscent of the "pirate era" of centuries past, appears as early as 1776 as a land and body of water designation on a map and presumably originates from the smuggling that flourished along the Rhine at that time. The lake lies amidst a still idyllic and intact Rhine floodplain landscape. Its appearance has changed only slightly over the centuries. The lake's predecessor was a former loop of the Rhine, which was relocated to the right bank during the Rhine regulation process. Around 1950, the lake, once overgrown with reeds, was still covered in large carpets of leaves, including long-stemmed water lilies and water lilies. The Eggenstein Anglers' Club also fishes in the backwaters. The actual birth of the lake was the gravel mining that began in 1959 by the company “Fretter”, which, after a temporary suspension at the end of the 1980s, was expanded to a depth of 17-20 meters from 1995 onwards.
