    Lady Chapel in Ertingen
The enthusiastic diocesan bishop Paul Wilhelm Keppler described the Marienkapelle in Ertingen as the “pearl of the Danube valley”. The sanctuary, built in 1754 by the master builder Johann Schneider, was designed in the Rococo style by the workshop of Joseph Anton Feuchtmayer and the painter Joseph Ignaz Wegscheider until 1758 and represents a special spatial experience. “Beautiful style” made Madonna and Child. (Today a replica from 1980!) The Ertingen Rosary Brotherhood, founded in 1661, was the client, which makes the Marienkapelle a very rare and impressive testimony to a prayer community of lay people and late Baroque popular piety. While the ceremonial consecration by the auxiliary bishop Carl Jospeh Fugger took place in 1763, the Enlightenment and political reforms pushed the Maienkapelle to the brink of the abyss a short time later. In 1784 the Rosary Brotherhood was dissolved and expropriated by law and in 1788 the demolition of the Marienkapelle, which now seemed useless, was considered. It is only thanks to the devotion to Mary and the pride of the people of Erting (in their chapel) that the building has survived to this day and is so impressively preserved. The first comprehensive interior renovation took place in 1911 by the painter and restorer Jakob Baur from Menges. The chapel has been a listed building since 1929. To this day, the original use as a “devotional church” can still be clearly seen, while nowadays bridal couples particularly like to exchange vows in the Lady Chapel.
