The impressive basalt columns on Dietrichsberg are the result of volcanic activity. Basalt is still mined here today between the Dietrichsberg and the Geiskop, one of the extinct volcanoes.
According to legend, a black-clad carter with a headless black horse is said to be up to mischief in front of his ghostly vehicle between the Dietrichsberg and the Bremer Berg. He is a cursed robber who is said to have once killed a teamster and has since been condemned to ride through the night in the scary carriage.
