According to a legend, Ludwig the Springer (1042-1123) was imprisoned here. He should the Count Palatine Friedrich III. have stabbed. When he was about to be executed, he saved himself with a bold leap from the castle tower into the Saale. Since then he has been called Ludwig the Springer.
