Well-known written sources testify that the Zapyškis Church was first mentioned in 1562, mentioning the owner of the Paštuva manor buried in it. It is mentioned in the literature that the church could have been built by the Grand Duke of Lithuania Vytautas, but there is no evidence. The style of the church is not typical of Vytautas' time. Povilas Sapiegas from Novgorod Voivodeship can be considered its builder.
