Kaunas Castle is the oldest surviving brick castle in Lithuania. The castle built at the confluence of the Nemunas and the Neris was first mentioned in written sources in 1361. It is believed that in the 14th century it was built on the site of a former wooden castle to repel the attacks of the Crusaders. A settlement began to develop around the castle, which later grew into the present city.
