A special sight in Sonneberg-Oberlind is the well-preserved fortified church of St. Aegidien. It was first mentioned in documents in 1455, but its origins probably date back to the High Middle Ages. In 1525, Oberlind was already the center of an extensive parish, which at times included up to eleven villages. As part of the former church fortifications, the defensive wall is still well preserved today. The space between the church and the wall was used as a cemetery until the 18th century. The church tower with corner turrets is a striking feature.

In 1530, Martin Luther personally inaugurated the region's first Protestant pastor, Andreas Lehr, into office here.

A beautiful village church. It clearly shows that Oberlind once had greater significance than it does today.

Closed because of "I don't like you". An analysis could be: education and prosperity are incompatible with religion. I experience this construct more and more often in Germany. What a pity.

        Response from the parish:

Thank you for your message and your interest in our church.

St. Aegidien is open to visitors during office hours (Mon-Fri). In the display case (to the right of the main gate) there is a notice with the phone number of the parish office. The parish office is right next to the church. This means there are no waiting times for interested visitors. Perhaps you are still nearby? Then please get in touch with us.
